Top 5 Reasons to Visit Oman

Posted on 24 May 2018

A global nomad and avid foodie, Stephanie of Steph Yt Travels shares her top 5 reasons to visit Oman.

Stephanie Yt is a London-based photographer and journalist always seeking the best places to eat and where to snap that insta-worthy picture.

Located on the Arabian Peninsula, the beautiful country of Oman is a striking mixture of sweeping mountains, extraordinary sand dunes and crystal clear turquoise waters. The country is rich in historical heritage, rugged landscapes and indulgent resorts, making it a hot spot for travellers in search of a luxury escape in a country less travelled.

1. The Sunshine

Boasting sunshine and tan-worthy temperatures all year round, Oman is the perfect place to lie back on a sunbed with a good book. From infinity pools to deep sea scuba dives, the choice is endless. Just be sure to pack both bikinis as well as more conservative beach wear as the locals are still quite conservative with swimwear.

2. The Food

For those who enjoy a good Mezze platter, this is something the Omani’s do extremely well with their creamy hummus, fresh tabouleh and hot fluffy pitta bread. Other highlight dishes include spicy shakshukas, mouth-wateringly rich tagines and the famous local Shuwa. An Omani delicacy where they slow cook the lamb wrapped in palm leaves and cooked over hot embers under the earth in a traditional village Shuwa pit.

3. The Hiking

For those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, Oman also boasts miles and miles of picturesque hiking trails. The hikes range from easy to challenging and can go for 45 minutes to 8 hours long. You’ll have the opportunity to explore abandoned mountain villages and natural water reservoirs under the dry Arabian sun. It’s a great way to see Oman’s beautiful countryside first hand as well as get that step count in.

4. Holistic Pursuits

If you fancy a luxury spa retreat in a unique destination, then Oman is the place for you. From mountaintop sunrise yoga classes, romantic champagne floral baths and sumptuous massage treatments, the Alila hotel Jabal Akhdar in Oman offers it all. Treat your mind and your body to some indulgent R&R post adventure and hikes whilst watching the sunset against the remarkable Omani mountains.

 5. Adrenaline Based Activities

For those who are new to this activity, Via Feratta translates into ‘Iron Way’ in Italian and is an adrenaline-fuelled mountain climbing ‘route’ that traverses suspended tightropes, cliff side steps and hanging bridges. The participant is strapped into a harness and follows the coach along a steel cable through a steep route on the lip of the Canyon. Exhilarating and a great workout, it's an amazing experience for those looking for something more exciting. Oman boasts an extraordinary Via Feratta course at the Alila Hotels Jabal Ahkdar.
